Thorpe Nursery Pre-School believe that all children deserve the best start in life. All children are individuals and learn and develop at different rates. Thorpe Nursery Pre-School work closely with other professionals and outside agencies, including speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, educational psychologists, and Surrey SEND advisors to ensure that children with additional needs are fully supported and have a tailored learning plan in place to ensure their needs are met.
At times children may become overwhelmed and with support they are able to access our soft pay room complete with dark den and sensory lights to help regulate their emotions.
Staff are also trained in using a high attention bucket, this can be on a 1:1 basis or in a very small group in a quiet room away from the main group. High attention bucket helps children focus their attention.
The nursery uses Now and Next Boards, Visual timetables, and Picture Exchange System (PECS) with children who are unable to communicate verbally.
Nursery staff are also trained in Makaton, Makaton is language programme that uses symbols, signs, and speech to support development of communication. Being able to communicate is one of the most important skills in life. All our nursery children regardless of additional needs are taught one Makaton sign a week as a matter of routine.
All local authorities must publish a Local Offer. The Local Offer tells you what support the local authority expects to be available for children and young people with special educational needs and or disabilities. (SEND) It must include information about education, health, and car provision. It should also tell you about training, employment, and independent living for young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities.
